beyond pisses me off that the US and england - two countries that did virtually nothing to stop the spread of covid on their own - are getting premier access to the vaccine just bc they have the $ and the desire to send all of us back to work asap no matter the human cost. meanwhile many countries in the so called third world that took covid seriously, locked down, and provided for their citizens without a second thought or complaint wont receive the vaccine until 2022 or beyond. totally fair and cool.
US and europe really said fuck preventative measures we’ll just let hundreds of thousands of people die while we develop a vaccine that will get them all back to laboring for us at full capacity as fast as possible…send it to countries we’ve labeled third world who’ve done infinitely better keeping their people safe with a fraction of the resources even after we colonized, destabilized, and terrorized them for centuries? why would we ever do that?
While I think the government (and businesses) do hold some of the blame, these places also have people not wanting to go into lockdown (thinks to groups of people that held signs with “I want a hair cut!” And refusing to wear a mask).
These mixes of attitude lead to numbers being on the rise. Guess where they were mixed the most? Most of the western world.
Australia and New Zealand (missing on this map) had people okay with locking down and even now most people are okay with the not a lot of social interaction. It’s not perfect, but there hasn’t been protests to open up again (except Melbourne). These guys may be the only exception to the western world storm for a few other reasons I won’t go into.
And this was a thing that was always going to happen. America and England had the money to do research and find a cure. They have done so. Now they have to decide to help their people or the world, and most, if not all governments, are going to pick their own people first, if only so they can then get back to a normal life, and be able to protect their workers such as hospital staff, the scientists that have created the cure, those who are going to be able to transport the cure, and there’s a benefit with the rich going first.
They are able to help drive the price down.
Like when anything new is created, the first lots are expensive. Too expensive for third world countries. Having first world countries take on those costs allows for the process to be more streamlined, other methods to make the product cheaper and cheaper help for it to become cheaper and cheaper. This then leads to the third world countries being able to access these things. But it takes time and money, so they unfortunately don’t get first go.
Our world unfortunately lacks people and governments that don’t run on money instead of kindness. So those that make the cure and have the money will get the cure first. Every single time.
I do get this is annoying, particularly when it seems that lives are not worth saving when they totally are, but there are many factors at work, and it’s not just money dollars in powerful people’s eyes. It’s the people and the collective nature as well.
